To jest bardzo ciekawa książka， ale nie nadaje się na jedno posiedzenie。 Do tego nie jest też dla każdego czytelnika， mam wrażenie że groza dawnej chirurgii mocniej odziałuje na osoby mające do czynienia z chirurgią。

"A Century of Surgeons"。This book was so good。 In many ways shocking， too， especially when you get to learn how often the arrogance， ego centrism and simple greed of some medical minds， seemingly well educated and otherwise bright people， was standing in the way of progress of medicine and made impossible saving countless lives。 How the simple act of washing surgeon's hands was ridiculed and even sabotaged for many years by medical personnel， students and - the horror - most respected professors "A Century of Surgeons"。This book was so good。 In many ways shocking， too， especially when you get to learn how often the arrogance， ego centrism and simple greed of some medical minds， seemingly well educated and otherwise bright people， was standing in the way of progress of medicine and made impossible saving countless lives。 How the simple act of washing surgeon's hands was ridiculed and even sabotaged for many years by medical personnel， students and - the horror - most respected professors。 When you think about it - where would humanity be now， if we learned at least washing our hands in， for example， XV century？。。。 How much of the population was lost because we did not？ Think about it today， especially today。 。。。more

Skvelé čítanie o tom， ako vyzeralo zdravotníctvo v 19-tom storočí a ako sa kreovalo to， čo považujeme za niečo ako štandard。 Písané ako napínavý román， v ktorom sa deje veľa vecí， a zmeny sa nedejú v rozmedzí týždňov， ale rokov， lebo ako to už býva， zvyk je železná posteľ a ruky si predsa umývať netreba。 #trebacitat！

Kniha napísaná absolútne s ľahkosťou， hoci miestami tam tieklo viac krvi ako v najlepšom “krváku”。 Napriek tomu， že to nie je román， dej a hlavne samotné objavy na poli medicíny， ktoré opisuje vás nútia ponoriť sa do nej ako do toho najlepšieho príbehu。Príbehu ktorý formovala ľudská zvedavosť， ale aj túžba po moci， uznaní， peniazoch， ale najmä snaha ochrániť zdravie。 Veci nám dnes v medicíne tak samozrejmé takými ešte pred 150 rokmi vôbec neboli。 Umývanie rúk， dezinfekcia pri operáci - nezmysel Kniha napísaná absolútne s ľahkosťou， hoci miestami tam tieklo viac krvi ako v najlepšom “krváku”。 Napriek tomu， že to nie je román， dej a hlavne samotné objavy na poli medicíny， ktoré opisuje vás nútia ponoriť sa do nej ako do toho najlepšieho príbehu。Príbehu ktorý formovala ľudská zvedavosť， ale aj túžba po moci， uznaní， peniazoch， ale najmä snaha ochrániť zdravie。 Veci nám dnes v medicíne tak samozrejmé takými ešte pred 150 rokmi vôbec neboli。 Umývanie rúk， dezinfekcia pri operáci - nezmysel a šarlatánstvo。Operácia pod narkózou？ Kdeže， veď kvalita chirurga sa predsa pozná podľa toho， ako rýchlo vám vie zaživa amputovať napríklad aj nohu。 Trhanie zubov？ Čo nejde silou， ide ešte väčšou。 A mnoho ďalších príkladov， od pôrodov-cisárskym rezom， po operácie žalúdka， srdca， ktoré prebiehali tak， že dnes by sme to nazvali pokusmi， resp。 zločinom。 Časy ale boli také。。。No napriek dobovej skepse proti novým spôsobom v medicíne， nakoniec vyhrali nové prístupy， ktoré znamenali zvrat a obrovský pokrok v spôsobe liečby， operácií。 A zachránili množstvo životov a znížili bolesti。Ako sme sa teda dostali od rezania zaživa k operáciam srdca v narkóze a bez bolestí？ Prečítajte túto knihu a dozviete sa， a myslím že budete celkom fascinovaní， napriek tomu， že to nie je učebnica medicíny， ale skôr histórie。 Vydavateľstvo Absynt už tradične prináša skvelé knihy。 Storočie chirurgov je za mňa ich top kniha。 Ak môžte， určite si túto knihu kúpte a podporte ich， študentom viem knihu požičať ♻️ 。。。more

Naprawdę przyjemna lektura， fascynujące temat， chociaż na pierwszym roku studiów nie interesował mnie nawet przez chwilę。 Moim zdaniem to obowiązkowa lektura dla wszystkich zainteresowanych rozwojem medycyny， zwłaszcza osobami zainteresowanymi zabiegówkami。 Dla mnie - fascynująca przeprawa i konfrontacja z obecnymi przypadkami codziennie spotykanymi w szpitalu。

Napriek môjmu osobnému problému vstupovať do nemocníc a iných podrobných pracovísk a s hroznou znalosťou hocičoho čo sa k zdravotníctvu a vede čo i len približovalo som sa pustila do tejto knihy。 Neľutujem ani minútu jej čítania a odporúčam vo veľkom。 Chirurg Hartmann putuje z Ameriky do Európy niekoľkokrát a popritom nám jednoduchým jazykom opisuje objavy storočia - anastéziu， prvú operáciu srdca či potrebu gumených rukavíc。

The Century of the Surgeon by Jurgen ThorwaldThe book written in 1956 follows the adventures of a fictional doctor， Henry Steven Hartmann， who happened to be present at most of the revolutionary advances in surgery from the discovery of anesthesia by nitrous oxide and antiseptic surgery onwards。 Thanks to them surgery stopped being insanely cruel butchery。 Countless previous generations that suffered in nowadays unimaginable pain could only dream about a painless surgery。The book is also about The Century of the Surgeon by Jurgen ThorwaldThe book written in 1956 follows the adventures of a fictional doctor， Henry Steven Hartmann， who happened to be present at most of the revolutionary advances in surgery from the discovery of anesthesia by nitrous oxide and antiseptic surgery onwards。 Thanks to them surgery stopped being insanely cruel butchery。 Countless previous generations that suffered in nowadays unimaginable pain could only dream about a painless surgery。The book is also about the high price some surgeons and scientists had to pay for discovering new and improving old methods in surgery or in medicine generally。Horace Wells who discovered anesthesia by nitrous oxide and ether in 1841-1845 was ridiculed by other dentists and surgeons when he told them that painless surgery is possible。 He began self-experimenting with ether and chloroform， and he became addicted to chloroform which eventually led him to commit suicide in 1848 by slitting his left femoral artery after inhaling an analgesic dose of chloroform。During Wells' life， his student William Morton would falsely claim that he was the discoverer of anesthesia and would seek a patent for "letheon" which was in fact ether that has been known since the 8th century。 This questionable claim became an obsession for the rest of his life。 The same claim was made by another physician Charles Jackson。 He also claimed he discovered guncotton， the telegraph and the digestive action of stomach。 Morton and Jackson were rather money/fame-seeking than help-providing doctors。However， The Parisian Medical Society （12 days before his death in 1848）， the American Dental Association （in 1864） and the American Medical Association （in 1870） honored Wells as the first to discover and perform surgical operations without pain。Like always in history， not everybody was happy about advances in medicine。 Fox example， the Catholic Church claim that women must be in pain during giving-birth cannot receive any pain-relieving help because the Bible says so （p。75）。 One could only wish a pope and cardinals could have become pregnant。Probably， the most HEARTBREAKING story （I am still overwhelmed and moved while writing this review） in the book on refusing to practice new methods in surgery is about Ignaz Semmelweis， a Hungarian physician who in 1847 discovered that hand-washing with a solution of chlorinated lime reduced the occurrence of fatal childbed fever tenfold in maternity institutions。 Semmelweis had reason to expect that the chlorine washings would be widely adopted， saving tens of thousands of lives from fatal infections mostly caused by surgeons' dirty hands。However， he was largely ignored， rejected and ridiculed by the medical community。 His ground-breaking theoretical innovation: that the disease had only one cause， lack of cleanliness had only handful supporters。 Some doctors were offended when asked to wash their hand after a autopsy and mocked him for it。 He was fired from the hospital in Vienna for political reasons （he supported the Hungarian revolution against the ruling Habsburgs in Vienna） and because nurses complained about his "obsession with clean hands and bed-sheets"。Semmelweis was outraged by the indifference of the doctors and began writing open and increasingly angry letters to prominent European obstetricians， at times denouncing them as irresponsible murderers。 It did not help。His student wrote a article explaining Semmelweis's work published in The Lancet， a prominent medical journal。 It did not help。Beginning in 1861， Semmelweis suffered from various nervous complaints。 He suffered from severe depression and became absentminded。 He turned every conversation to the topic of childbed fever。In 1865， nearly twenty years after his breakthrough， the increasingly outspoken Semmelweis supposedly suffered a nervous breakdown and was committed to an asylum by his colleagues。 He died 14 days later after being beaten by the guards， from a gangrenous wound on his right hand which might have been caused by the beating。Semmelweis's practice earned widespread acceptance only 15 years after his death， when Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch confirmed the germ theory （1863）， and Joseph Lister， acting on the French microbiologist's research， practised and operated using antiseptic methods， with great success。 Pasteur and Lister were sadly mocked by the medical community， too。This book is a bittersweet page-turner full of stories similar to Semmelweis' one。 High recommended。 。。。more
